Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar returned to his alma mater at Don Jose Gallego Elementary to give back to the community.
He hosted a back-to-school free haircuts event, where about 50 children took advantage of the initiative.
"It's important to come back and give back to your old community," Cuellar said, adding that the school looked more like a church and was called back then Buenos Aires Elementary.
Cuellar had in mind to help out parents as the kids prepare to return to school.
"We want to help them get a haircut. That's one less thing parents need to worry about. We also have some school supplies to give to the students," the sheriff said.
Principal Amber Almanza said she appreciated the support from the Sheriff's Office.
"For students to show up the first day of school with their fresh haircut, it gives them that confidence that they need to shine," Almanza said.
"Children are already nervous. They don't know what to expect. Them coming in with a fresh haircut means that they are going to have that confidence to shine and make sure they are ready to learn."
Jose "Gucci The Barber" Gallardo, owner of Gucci Fades Barber Studio, said he always partners with the Sheriff's Office.
"We're just giving back to the community like every year, partnering up with Sheriff Cuellar. We love doing it," Gallardo said.
"It's always good to give that fresh cut to children going back to school, so they can feel better, clean, comfortable and be ready for school."
Gallardo added, "Sometimes, families can't afford a cut. We're just trying to make their day by giving back and giving them that fresh look for school."
Gilberto "The Hair Doctor" Gamboa, an instructor at Immaculate Cut Barber Institute, said it is an awesome feeling to be part of an event that supports families in getting ready for school.
Gamboa said it's rewarding to see children smile after getting a fresh cut. He added that a fresh cut gives confidence to the students on their first day of school.
"It's really an awesome feeling," Gamboa said.
