NYPD Put Officers with In-House Jobs on the Streets

Cops in precinct commands assigned to in-house jobs have been ordered to hit the streets, according to an NYPD memo.
The officers who work as plant managers performing tasks like emptying the trash will now instead return to regular enforcement duties in the patrol, transit and housing bureaus, the memo said.
“In an effort to maximize the number of uniformed officers assigned to patrol duties, uniformed members assigned as plant managers ... are no longer authorized,” the memo said. “Effective immediately, any member assigned as a plant manager shall be returned to operational duties.”
Over the next 60 days, the NYPD plans to replace the cops assigned as plant managers with civilian workers, the memo said.
The move is likely driven in part by the 35.6% increase in major felony crime through Aug. 21 — or 79,361 incidents compared to 58,695 in the same period in 2021.
