Mo. Sheriff's Facebook Page Hacked with 'DESTROY AMERICA' Photo

Nov. 9, 2021
The profile photo for the Clay County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page was first changed to a portrait of Chinese communist Mao Zedong and then to a weapon.

A sheriff's office in the Kansas City metro said they were hacked Monday morning.

At about 3:30 a.m. Monday, the profile picture for the Clay County Sheriff's Office Facebook page was changed to an image of Mao Zedong, a Chinese communist leader and founder of the People's Republic of China, who died in 1976.

The caption read, in all capital letters, "DESTROY AMERICA."

About 45 minutes later a photo of a weapon was also posted and the office's location was changed to " China."

"Our Facebook page has been hacked," the department posted on Twitter Monday morning. "We're working to stop it and figure out what happened."

The office wrote on Twitter at about 7:35 a.m. Monday that the page had been restored. The images posted by the hacker were deleted.

"We'll be working with Facebook to determine what happened," the office wrote on Twitter.

No other information was immediately available.
