Unified Law Enforcement in Portland in Light of Election

Nov. 4, 2020
Agencies will be working together to prevent election-related violence.

OREGON-Portland will rely on Oregon State Police and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement response during the election. The Oregon National Guard will be on standby as well. This new arrangement began at 5 PM on Monday and will remain in effect until 5 PM Wednesday. However, if need be the unified public safety measures may be extended.

The effort will entail Portland police reporting to the unified command. This will allow deputies and state police to avoid the directive that bans Portland police from utilizing certain types of enforcement such as tear gas. By implementing the unified command, more police presence can be used city wide, especially if election-related disruptions happen such as protests or election-related violence.

Law enforcement will be patrolling more heavily in areas such as voting locations.
