NYPD Officer Released From Hospital After Being Pinned by Carjacking Suspects

An NYPD officer injured after being pinned between by fleeing suspects was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Officer Vanessa Rodriguez, who was injured as the carjacking and robbery suspects attempted to make a getaway Sunday, left Jacobi Medical Center as officers lined the sidewalk and bagpipe music played, according to WABC-TV.

Officials say Rodriguez opened fire after the 17-year-old driver began to drive in reverse, pinning her between two cars and dragging her as she attempted to flee the scene in the Bronx. The suspect was listed in critical condition at Lincoln Hospital with gunshot wounds to her chest and left side of her torso.

Two other suspects were taken into custody.

The crime spree began around 6 a.m. Sunday in the Bronx, where the three suspects allegedly carjacked a vehicle. They then drove to Manhattan, where they were involved in another robbery. After that, the suspects drove to Brooklyn, where they allegedly committed two more robberies and a carjacking.

Around 11 a.m., authorities were alerted that the vehicle had been located in the vicinity of Sheridan Avenue and East 162nd Street in the Melrose section shortly before noon.

The 24-year-old officer, assigned to the 44th Precinct, suffered injuries to her hip, leg and pelvis and is expected to make a full recovery.
