A New York State corrections officer fired on her ex-boyfriend, who is also a corrections officer, before taking her own life outside a Queens prison Tuesday morning.
The woman reportedly riddled the man's vehicle with bullets outside the Queensboro Correctional Facility in Long Island City on Van Dam St. near 47th Avenue around 6:30 a.m., according to The New York Daily News. Witnesses said that the woman began shooting as the man took cover inside the prison, left briefly and came back and shot up his car before shooting herself in the chest
Paramedics rushed the woman to Elmhurst Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
"This morning there was a tragic incident outside of the Queensboro Correctional Facility involving two correction officers," Department of Correctional Services and Community Supervision Spokesman Thomas Mailey said. "At no time was security to the facility breached. As a precaution, the facility is operating on a modified schedule. The Department is assisting the New York City Police Department in its investigation."
