A Georgia corrections officer is accused of providing contraband to inmates, and a video was posted showing police officers figuratively stripping him of his authority by cutting off his shirt while handcuffed.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office posed a video to its Facebook page that showed the arrest of a Dayton Beasley, WSAV-TV reports. The video, which has since been deleted, depicted the corrections officer being "stripped of his authority" by police using scissors to cut off his uniform.
“You come to our jail and do this, this is what it’s gon’ get you,” an officer is heard saying in the video. “You’re a disgrace to this uniform, and you need to go to jail for good.”
After taking down the video, the sheriff's office apologized for posting it and said that the motivation behind it was to show agency transparency. Sheriff Robert E. "Chuck" Mosely had not known that the video was published on social media, the sheriff's office said in an online update.
Beasley's arrest was the culmination of a two-week undercover two-week investigation by the sheriff's office's narcotics unit, and more arrests are expected. Beasley was charged with violation of oath of office, trading with inmates without consent of the warden or superintendent and other counts.
“Sheriff Mosely and (Jessup Police) Cheif Morgan would like this case to serve as an example of their hard stance against corruption in Law Enforcement,” the sheriff's office said.
