AUBURN, NY—An inmate at the Auburn Correctional Facility assaulted a corrections officer using a homemade weapon, troopers said.

The inmate, Amar Bell, 49, of Marcy, struck a correction officer multiple times and stabbed him three times with an ice pick-style weapon on March 2, Trooper Lynnea Crane, a spokesperson for State Police, said in a news release Wednesday.

The correction officer was brought to Auburn Community Hospital. He was out of work for two weeks, Crane said.

Bell was taken into custody by prison staff after allegedly becoming combative and resisting arrest, Crane said. Officers recovered the homemade weapon and secured it as evidence.

Bell was not charged. The case has been submitted to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office for a grand jury to consider charges.

Bell was sent to prison in 2014 to serve a sentence of 20 years to life for first-degree and second-degree assault as well as criminal possession of a weapon.

Bell, who lived in Yonkers, got into an argument with an employee of a games and wireless phone store in Yonkers in April 2011, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. He pulled out a knife and slashed the victim across the face, leaving a permanent scar.
