Three people are charged in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle synthetic cannabinoids into a Pennsylvania jail using a Doritos bag.
Detectives assigned to the Allegheny County Jail received information last month that two incarcerated individuals were planning to smuggle contraband into the facility, the Allegheny County Police Department stated in a news release. The inmates were identified as Tyreace Platt, 31, and Chaz Coles, 39.
On Monday, detectives reviewed jail and court records indicating Platt and Coles were allegedly coordinating with an outside accomplice to place synthetic cannabinoids, known as K2, inside a bathroom at a local magistrate’s office. The placement was set to coincide with Coles’ Feb. 3 preliminary hearing, police said.
At around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said they observed a 33-year-old man, identified as Tyrique Craighead, arrive at the location and enter a bathroom. After Craighead exited, detectives conducted a search and recovered an open bag of Doritos with suspected contraband.
Several rolled paper items testing positive for synthetic cannabinoids were recovered from the bag, and Craighead was taken into custody at the scene.
Platt, Coles and Craighead are each facing multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, contraband-related offenses, and criminal use of a communication facility. The investigation remains ongoing.
