Sept. 15--Talk about the ol' ball and chain.
Ashlee Plummer, 29, had only been married for a few minutes Friday afternoon when sheriff's officers arrested her on the third floor of the Reno County Courthouse in her white, lace dress and escorted her downstairs to jail.
The Reno County jail log shows she was booked into jail on a charge of felony aggravated battery, although District Court records on Friday did not indicate any formal charges had been filed against her.
More than a dozen of Plummer's family and friends, and her husband, Gilbert Benitez, waited outside of the Law Enforcement Center and cheered when she finally came outside, more than an hour later, after posting a $4,000 bond.
Plummer and her family questioned the timing of her arrest.
"They told me they've had the warrant since July 30," she said of sheriff's officers.
Plummer acknowledged she got into a fight with another woman at a local bar but noted she also filed a police report in the case. She said she was hit over the head with a beer bottle before the fight earlier this year at Vic's Bar was broken up. Hutchinson police reports on the incident were not immediately available.
"It happened about four months ago, and I've never been questioned about it, and no one ever called me to tell me I had a warrant," Plummer said.
Plummer and Benitez obtained a marriage license Friday afternoon before being married by District Judge Trish Rose.
Pam Moses, chief clerk of the district court, acknowledged the court system does indicate whether a person has an outstanding warrant when they obtain a marriage license, or any other documents from court clerks.
But, according to Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson, the sheriff's office "got an anonymous call" alerting officers Plummer would be getting married Friday at the courthouse.
"We gave her a choice on whether she wanted to be arrested before or after (the wedding)," Henderson said.
As for the uninvited guests, Plummer said, "They did let us go through with the marriage, though."
She walked out of the local Law Enforcement Center, carrying her heels in one hand, and appeared in good spirits as she embraced her husband and her friends.
"It can't get any worse today," said Plummer, adding that she was ready to go celebrate her nuptials.
