Denver police are searching for an escaped prisoner with a gunshot wound who fled from a hospital on Sunday night.

Samuel Lee Govea, 22, was being treated for a gunshot wound to his left leg at Denver Health Medical Center when he escaped about 7:40 p.m., police said.

Govea is wanted for a string of serious charges, including felony assault, felony menacing, failure to register as a sex offender, felony burglary, violation of a protection order and felony escape, police said.

Police did not say how the prisoner was wounded or how he escaped.

At about 7:40 p.m., police and sheriff's deputies were setting up a perimeter around the hospital and searching nearby Sunken Gardens Park at Delaware Street and West Eighth Avenue, according to police radio traffic.

Govea, whose nickname is "Diablo," is described as a 5 feet, 9 inches tall and about 180 pounds with a short, brown-haired buzz cut, police said. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and hospital-issued pants, according to police radio traffic.

Police asked anyone with information about Govea to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. People can also text to CRIMES (274637) and the title DMCS and enter their message.

Those who provide information that leads to the arrest and charging of a Govea can receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
