PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department has adopted the ASP Sentry Chain Handcuff as its new standard-issue restraint following an evaluation that began in 2024.
The approximately 2,400-officer department evaluated replacement restraints through its defensive tactics division. Officer Shane Merwin led testing of the Sentry Cuffs, which were ultimately approved by Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano.
According to the department’s evaluation, officers found the ASP restraints offered improvements over their previously issued handcuffs. The agency cited smooth and precise operation, handling characteristics, safety and overall quality.
ASP Western U.S. Sales Director Carlos Ruiz worked with Precision Uniforms, an Arizona-based law enforcement equipment distributor, during the evaluation, acquisition and implementation process.
"As one of the largest police departments in the country, Phoenix conducts exceptionally thorough evaluations before making department-wide equipment changes. We're proud that they selected Sentry Handcuffs and appreciate the confidence they've placed in ASP," Ruiz said.
The department-wide adoption provides Phoenix officers with a standardized restraint platform following an equipment evaluation involving operational handling and safety considerations.
