If it's already rugged, can it still be made better?

I have previously written a full review of the Getac’s last generation of the F110 rugged tablet. I think convertibles are especially cool because of their versatility BUT I also feel like a rugged tablet is better for the police officer working the street.  Why?  Because, to my way of thinking, every hinge… every port… every spot where something can enter the system represents a potential vulnerability. If you take a minute to read through the review I did of it, you’ll see the abuse testing I submitted the F110 to. I was impressed. So when Getac announced a new and improved version of the F110… my curiosity was piqued.

Just released, the 4th generation F110 fully rugged tablet incorporates the latest technologies to keep the tablet abuse-friendly but information and access secure. The optional Infra-Red camera supports facial recognition technology which is growing as a means of securing your devices. While a fingerprint scanner is accepted as common anymore, having your tablet scan your face to verify your identity and access is very new to the marketplace (as are the jokes about making sure you’re not wearing too much make up when you get the initial scans, or have a beard you shave off afterward, etc.).

The processors used increase not only computing performance but also more efficient power usage. That’s boosted by the still high class graphics, wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The display is still large. The overall thickness of the unit is still small. The “hot swap” battery design keeps officers computer capable in the field even during long shifts or forgetful times.

In other words, Getac took an already good design and put in some upgrades that further help us overcome the realities of our work. I look forward to doing a full review at some point in the near future, but I’m wondering just how much I can abuse this generation of rugged tablet. I guess you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!
