LISLE, Illinois -- A Lisle police officer jumped into action to save a boy trapped in the basement of a multi-unit structure fire early Tuesday morning.
Officer Bill Wise was nearby at the time of the fire and quickly arrived on the scene in the 2700 block Wayfaring Lane around 10:09 p.m., according to a news release.
Bystanders informed the 21-year veteran that a 14 year-old boy was trapped in the basement of one of the units. Wise forced entry into the unit but was initially overcome by the flames and smoke. After rushing to the rear of the unit, he was able to remove articles that blocked a window well and pull the child from the basement egress window.
Wise and the teenager were both treated for smoke inhalation and exhaustion at the scene. Wise was transported to a local hospital where he received additional treatment and was released early Wednesday morning. The department reported that both Wise and the boy are doing fine.
The department released the following message from Wise:
I would like to say thank you and express my appreciation for all of the support and words of encouragement from all the citizens of Lisle and beyond. Your words have been heard and truly mean a lot. I would also like to express my support to all of the families who have had their lives disrupted by this unfortunate house fire and to the courage shown by the boy who was rescued. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District for containing the fire and for the treatment given to me afterwards, as well as the emergency room personnel from Edward Hospital. A huge thank you to all my family and friends who have called, texted, or messaged me. Love you all. And finally, to all of my brothers and sisters in blue at the Lisle PD, thank you, specifically those who also responded to the fire call, Officer Brian Travis. Officer Jessie Hobein, and Sergeant Rob Sommer...thank you for helping to hold that line with me everyday, we do not fight alone. Be safe out there.
Sincerely,
Officer Bill Wise
