CLEVELAND, OH — Imagine driving on the freeway and suddenly seeing a horse — two of them — galloping on by next to your car. The unusual scene took place Saturday afternoon on I-90 just east of Dead Man’s Curve.

“We can confirm that today during routine care and exercise, two Cleveland Police horses inadvertently strayed,” Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz said in an email to cleveland.com.

Video obtained from the Ohio Department of Transportation shows the horses jogging on the side of the road near the unit’s stables on E. 38th St. and South Marginal Road at around 12:15 p.m. A separate video, taken from the opposite angle, then shows the horses casually trotting westbound in the eastbound lanes near the E. 55th St. exit, slowing down traffic before bringing it to a halt. Several nervous moments later, the horses pick up the pace and return to their homes at the direction of an officer on foot and another in a police cruiser like it was no big deal.

“Mounted officers promptly recovered both horses, ensuring their safety, and no further incidents ensued,” Diaz said.

Established in 1911, the Cleveland Mounted Police is made up of eight police officers and eight horses.
