Md. Trooper Critically Injured in Beltway Crash

The trooper was investigating a previous crash when a second crash occurred nearby, sending a vehicle into his cruiser, trapping him inside.

A Maryland State Police trooper was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash that partially shut down the Capital Beltway Thursday afternoon.

The trooper stationed at the College Park Barracks was involved in the collision on the Outer Loop of Interstate 495 north of Annapolis Road in the Lanham area around 2 p.m., according to WRC-TV.

The trooper was parked on the shoulder while investigating a previous crash when a second crash occurred nearby, sending one of the vehicles into the trooper's cruiser, trapping him inside.

The injured trooper was freed from the vehicle and flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was listed in critical condition.

There were at least three vehicles that sustained significant damage in the wreck.

The crash is currently under investigation.
