A handcuffed man seated on a couch inside an apartment early Sunday morning pulled out a handgun and shot a Sioux City, Iowa police officer in the leg.
Officers responded to the apartment around 3 a.m. and detained eight people suspected in a series of burglaries and robberies and were brought outside to be transported to the jail, according to The Sioux City Journal.
A lack of vehicles, however, meant Isaiah Mothershed had to wait and Officer Ryan Moritz and another officer took him back inside placed him on the couch while still handcuffed with his hands behind his back.
Mothershed then reached into the cushions of the couch and grabbed a .40 pistol, turned and shot Moritz in the left leg. A struggled between the officer and the suspect ensued and the gun went off, striking Mothershed in his own leg.
Both men were treated at the scene and transported to Mercy Medical Center. Moritz was soon released from the hospital and was recovering at home. Mothershed remained in the hospital Monday.
He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and five counts of robbery, one count of which is connected to a home invasion in December.
Six other people at the apartment Sunday also were arrested and charged with robbery and other charges. A 15-year-old juvenile was not arrested.
