A Shreveport, La. police officer was shot and killed Wednesday night while responding to a call.
Officer Thomas LaValley responded with other officers to the 3500 Block of Del Rio Street in the Queensborough neighborhood around 9:14 a.m. for a report of a suspicious person, according to The Shreveport Times.
An armed man was believed to be inside a home threatening a family member. When police arrived, shots were fired and LaValley suffered multiple wounds.
The four-year veteran of the force was transported to University Health where he died.
"(He) was a best friend in every sense. Just a true genuine person from south Louisiana. You couldn't ask for anyone better to be in your corner," friend Casey Habich told the newspaper. "He was one of the good guys. He was a caretaker and went above and beyond to make sure his family and friends were always well looked after."
The gunman, identified as Grover D. Cannon, is currently being sought by authorities and is also wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred in July.
Update: Cannon was captured Thursday afternoon.
Funeral arrangements for LaValley are pending.
