Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:

Weekend (Oct. 17-19)

A weekslong search for a missing University of Virginia student came to an end after police officials discovered human remains they believed to be hers.

Further forensic tests are needed to confirm whether the remains are those of 18-year-old Hannah Graham.

The New York Times reported that the Ferguson, Mo. police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teen feared for his life during the altercation.

Officer Darren Wilson told investigators that he was pinned in his vehicle as him and Michael Brown struggled over his gun.

Police made dozens of arrests after college students wreaked havoc during an annual pumpkin festival in Keene.

The violence prompted police in riot gear to use tear gas as they tried to control the crowds of Keene State College students.

A Washington State man was jailed after allegedly shooting at police stations and other targets in three towns.

Snohomish County officials say that Hans Hansen is under investigation of first-degree assault with a weapon and drive-by shooting for the attacks.

Monday (Oct. 20)

An Alton, Mo. police officer died in a cruiser crash while responding to a house fire.

Officer Eddie Johnson Jr. was en route to the blaze when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off of the road and rolled the cruiser several times.

Police investigating the slayings of seven women whose bodies were found over the weekend in Indiana said it could be the work of a serial killer.

Hammond Police Chief John Doughty said that Darren Vann's confession to the slaying of one woman led police to the discovery of six other bodies.

Authorities searched for clues and evidence after finding remains believed to be a missing University of Virginia student.

Authorities interviewed nearby residents and picked through leaves on the side of a sparsely populated highway in search for links to the disappearance of Hannah Graham.

A DEA agent was shot in the elbow as he and other agents were serving a search warrant at the residence of a suspected drug trafficker in South Carolina.

Special Agent Barry Wilson was allegedly shot by Joel Robinson at the home in Orangeburg County.

Tuesday (Oct. 21)

A northeastern Pennsylvania school district closed its schools after at least two reported sightings of the suspect in a deadly state police ambush.

Officials in the Pocono Mountain School District announced the decision after a police officer reported seeing a man who may have been Eric Frein.

The U.S. Department of Justice revealed plans to investigate the Baltimore Police Department.

The agency announced initial details about the collaborative-reform initiative to curb police brutality in the city.

Investigators are reviewing unsolved murders and missing person reports after the arrest of a suspected serial killer.

Police say that Darren Vann confessed to killing seven women Indiana and hinted at more victims over a 20-year span.

A man awaiting trial for murder was being sought after he was mistakenly released from a Baltimore detention facility.

Officials said that the error that led to the release of Rodriquez Purnell was not recognized for two days.

Wednesday (Oct. 22)

A Canadian soldier was gunned down at point-blank range at the National War Memorial in what officials called an act of terrorism.

Michael Zehaf-Bibeau fatally shot Cpl. Nathan Cirillo before opening fire inside the Parliament building before being killed.

A man who climbed over the White House fence was charged with felonies for assaulting two Secret Service dogs and making threats.

Officials said that Dominic Adesanya kicked and punched the two K-9s, which were taken to a veterinarian and treated for minor bruising and cleared to return to duty.

Investigators are using the cellphone records of an Indiana man already charged in multiple slayings to pinpoint his movements.

Police said Darren Vann told police that he liked to check on the status of bodies he'd previously stashed after a fresh kill.

Increasingly, law enforcement investigators across the country are putting their faith in cadaver dogs to help find remains.

Recently, the specially trained dogs have helped convict some murder suspects, even when no body is found.

Thursday (Oct. 23)

An NYPD officer was critically wounded and a hatchet-wielding man was fatally shot after a group of officers was attacked.

Police Commissioner William Bratton said that the injured officer was being treated for a serious head wounded after the suspect purposely targeted four rookie officers.

A retired Canadian Mountie was hailed as a hero for stopping a gunman on a rampage inside the county's Parliament building this week.

Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers shot and killed Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who moments earlier had killed a soldier posted at the nearby National War Memorial.

Police in New Hampshire are using a relatively new application to collect photos and videos they hope will lead to arrests following weekend chaos at a pumpkin festival.

Keene police have created a LEEDIR account, or Large Emergency Event Digital Information Repository, where people can send images and videos to police directly from their smartphones.

The NYPD is beginning to equip all its 35,000 officers with smartphones that will include sophisticated crime-fighting tools

A $160 million plan will allow officers search databases, browse wanted posters and check suspects' fingerprints from virtually anywhere.

Friday (Oct. 24)

An off-duty Chicago police officer was "alert and talking" after he was shot in the chest during an apparent robbery attempt.

Police officials said the officer was "very lucky" following the incident that occurred after he was approached by three robbers as he got into his vehicle.

A Silicon Valley startup has developed technology to let dispatchers know when a police officer's weapon has been fired.

The product by Yardarm Technologies would notify dispatchers in real time when an officer's gun is taken out of its holster and when it's fired.
