Because of this, the Officer.com staff presents the "Quickfire Weekly Recap."

Here are some of the stories you may have missed that ran on our site this week:

Weekend (April 4-6)

Two NYPD police officers were critically injured while investigating reports of smoke in an apartment building Sunday.

Officers Dennis Guerra and Rosa Rodriguez were trapped in an elevator as the fire raged on the 13th floor of the building in Coney Island.

A veteran Los Angeles motorcycle officer was critically injured Saturday night when an SUV rammed him from behind.

The 26-year veteran of the force was stopped at a traffic light when his motorcycle was hit.

Federal officials announced on Friday that two drug-smuggling tunnels with rail systems stretching hundreds of yards across the U.S.-Mexico border have been discovered.

The first tunnel, stretching about 600 yards, was discovered Tuesday, while the second tunnel, located Thursday, stretches more than 700 yards and was built with more sophisticated features.

A charity hockey game between New York City police and firefighters erupted into a brawl on the ice Sunday.

Videos posted on YouTube show players from both teams clearing the benches, throwing punches and shoving one another as hockey sticks and gloves are left scattered on the ice.

Monday (April 7)

A gunman walked into a LAPD station lobby and opened fire, wounding one officer in an exchange of gunfire.

The gunman was wounded when two officers returned fire inside the West Bureau Traffic lobby in Mid-City. The wounded officer was struck multiple times, but is expected to survive.

A teenager confessed to setting Coney Island blaze that critically injured two NYPD officers Sunday, saying he was bored.

Police say the boy told them that he set the fire with a lighter and tried to put it out, but couldn't.

The sheriff of Palm Beach County, Fla. said that a deputy who fatally shot a burglary suspect was "lucky to be alive."

Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told reporters that the suspect, Tinoris Williams, came close to killing the deputy after he grabbed the deputy's gun during a fight in a vacant apartment.

A Northampton County, Va. deputy who was seriously injured in a wreck is recovering at home thanks to the efforts of an off-duty police officer.

Deputy Michael Sledge was responding to an emergency call on March 20 when he collided with a tractor-trailer and was luckily rescued by off-duty Emporia Police Officer Jerome Parker.

Tuesday (April 8)

Recently released police video shows a suspect fleeing from New Mexico troopers before being shot in the arm.

San Miguel County District Attorney Richard Flores announced last week that he cleared Officer Jonathan Wright of criminal charges.

A Spokane County, Calif. Sheriff's K-9 was recovering after being bitten by a pit bull a day earlier.

K-9 Laslo was chasing a burglary suspect Monday evening when the attack occurred. The pit bull was shot twice and killed by Laslo's handler, Deputy Jeff Thurman.

A San Diego Sheriff's deputy was stabbed in the leg after responding to a call at a La Mesa gas station.

The deputy responded to a Chevron to investigate a suspicious person when the attack occurred.

Wednesday (April 9)

One of the two NYPD officers critically injured in an apartment fire, allegedly set by a bored teen, succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Dennis Guerra was taken off of life support at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx after being declared brain dead. His partner, Officer Rosa Rodriguez, remained in critical condition.

An LAPD motorcycle officer who was struck by an alleged DUI driver Saturday also succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Christopher Cortijo was critically injured when his motorcycle was struck by an SUV as it was stopped at a red light.

Police in Pennsylvania were searching for a motive after a 16-year-old student went on a stabbing rampage at a high school.

Officials say Alex Hribal injured 21 students and a security guard just before the start of classes at Franklin Regional High School.

Video shows three Pinellas County, Fla. deputies stop a man from jumping off a bridge.

Deputy Troy Savetz, Cpl. James Brueckner and Sgt. Jeff Esterline were called to the Bay Pines Bridge on Sunday to find a man standing on the side of the bridge, threatening to jump.

Thursday (April 10)

A day after the death of NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra, two officers were hospitalized after rushing into a burning building.

Sgt. Adrian Harris and Officer Aml Elsokary arrived to the scene before firefighters arrived and began alerting tenants.

target=new>A critical DOJ report was released following an investigation into the use of force by the Albuquerque Police Department.

The report recommends that the department make changes to its use of force policy in order to place more emphasis on techniques for de-escalating potentially violent situations.

A manhunt across Florida ended with the arrest of a man who allegedly drove into a day care before speeding away.

Police charged 28-year-old Robert Alex Corchado with leaving the scene of the crash at a KinderCare facility that left a young girl dead.

Details were released on the rescue by an elite FBI Hostage Rescue Team of a North Carolina kidnap victim from an apartment complex in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Officials say that Frank Arthur Janssen had been the target of a kidnapping plot and was safely rescued by the highly trained team.

Friday (April 11)

More police officers are being trained how to deal with people with untreated mental illnesses.

Mental health advocates say that training can help police spot when someone's in crisis and adjust their tactics accordingly.

Dashcam video was released this week of a Midwest City, Okla. police sergeant's close call.

Sgt. Brad Rummell was lucky to get out of the way in time after a driver struck his cruiser as he was outside of the vehicle during a traffic stop.
