Video: Struck Okla. Cruiser Narrowly Misses Sergeant

A Midwest City, Okla. police sergeant is lucky to be alive after a driver slammed into his cruiser at full speed last week.

The incident -- captured on the patrol car's dashboard camera -- along Air Depot Boulevard on April 3, according to KFOR-TV.

Sgt. Brad Rummell's cruiser was totaled, but he managed to walk away unharmed.

At the beginning of the video, Rummell is seen walking up to a vehicle he pulled over and tells the driver to wear a seatbelt before walking back to his cruiser. At that moment, he sees a driver headed straight at him.

Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes told the news station that the female driver was on her cell phone at the time of the crash.

"He saw her on her phone that’s how he knew she wasn't going to stop," he said. "By the grace of God, we’re lucky we didn't lose an officer that day."

The police chief said that the way the officer parked may have saved his life. Officers are trained to turn their wheels to the left, away from the curb, any time they are pulled up on a traffic stop.

"It shot it (the car) at an angle instead of going straight forward," he said.

The car narrowly missed the sergeant and had his wheels not been turned, he likely would have been pinned between the police car and the vehicle he pulled over.

Two other people were transported to the hospital following the incident and the 35-year-old woman at the wheel of the vehicle was ticketed for inattentive driving.
