Christmas Eve, 2015, evening shift:
“So what are you doing for Christmas tomorrow, Max?” asked Sean. “I know you don’t have much to do with your family, except for your sister.”
Max was quiet for a moment before answering. “Yeah, I’ll go see her and her family tomorrow afternoon and that’s where I’ll be for dinner. JP’s going with me over there. In the morning we’re going to visit JP’s parents for brunch and presents.”
“JP,” said Sean quietly. “I don’t know how you scored her, but good on ya’, man. As long as you treat each other right and it doesn’t screw up the job…” He let the rest trail off. Relationships between officers who worked for the same agency were notorious for causing issues at work. So far, Max and JP had managed to make things work without any problems.
“It hasn’t messed anything up yet,” replied Max. He thought about saying the “corny” things like how good JP treated him or how he was happy to have found a woman that shared his interests, but instead, in true cop fashion, he added, “And it’s nice to date someone that not only can shoot but can carry. It’s like having backup all the time even when you’re not at work.”
“Yeah,” said Sean, laughing as he commented. “I’m SURE that’s the best part of it.” Like every other guy on the squad, Sean had a deep and abiding appreciation for how fit JP was and how she liked to, within professional considerations, flaunt her physique.
