“Unit 1095,” the radio squawked.
Sean snatched up the mic as Max drove. “Unit 1095. Go ahead, ma’am,” he transmitted.
“Unit 1095, respond to the 6100 block of Oceanfront Avenue, for the report of a fight, knives involved, one injured.”
“1095, 10-4, ma’am,” Sean replied as Max pressed down on the gas pedal. Sean reached over to flip on the lights and activate the siren.
“Unit 1096 to back,” said the dispatcher.
“1096, copy direct,” came Kyle’s voice in response. Mike and Kyle were the squad’s “twin towers of terror,” as they both were well over six feet tall and about three hundred pounds of strength (give or take some poundage depending on which one you were talking about).
A few moments later the dispatcher called them again. “Unit 1095, 1096… additional info: reports now are one victim down in front of the second apartment building on the left as you enter the lot.”
Sean and Kyle both replied that they’d copied the info.
About a block from the apartment complex Sean turned the siren off. Both Max and Sean knew that Mike and Kyle would likely be another few minutes before they arrived. Whatever Max and Sean found they’d have to deal with on their own until Mike and Kyle arrived – unless someone else showed up, and it would be a surprise if they did.
As they pulled into the parking lot Max lit up his spotlight and looked at the front of the apartment buildings. The parking lot lights weren’t lit even though it was well after dark. His light revealed a cluster of people in front of the second apartment building on his left, as dispatch had advised. It looked to be about a half dozen people all gathered around one spot. When the light hit them, a couple turned around and started waving frantically at the officers. Kyle called dispatch to advise that they were on the scene, and asking if an ambulance was also on the way. The dispatcher said she’d check and start one if there wasn’t one already on the way. Max thought about grabbing his trauma kit from the trunk but decided “first things first.” This was a call for a knife fight and he didn’t want his hands full if he might be presented with a potentially lethal threat.
He parked and got out just as Sean was doing the same thing on the other side. Both had their flashlights in their left hand, keeping their right hand free just in case. They moved with a purpose but didn’t just run up to the cluster of people. Both looked around the area checking for hiding spots or for folks who were standing off in the shadows. Why would they do that? It would be suspicious if they did, but neither Max nor Sean saw any such subjects.
As they got closer they could see someone on the ground in the middle of the cluster. “Help him!” came from several people as Max and Sean got closer. “Hurry up!” came another voice. “He’s bleeding to death!” came yet another voice.
