Eddie’s sunglasses just didn’t seem to be doing a good enough job.  Of course, when you’re hung over from having had too many margaritas the evening before, sunglasses usually aren’t ever strong enough.  Thankfully, he didn’t have to drive.  Max was a good enough driver and since Eddie was mostly sitting with his head back, eyes closed and praying for the throbbing in his skull to go away, he wouldn’t have noticed much anyway.

“It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it, Sarge?” asked Max gleefully.  He knew full well that Eddie was badly hung over but he was one of those people with no sympathy for the hung over.  Not a drinker himself, Max had never suffered a hangover.  Idly Eddie thought it might be the first thing he’d found lacking in the “rookie” he was training.

The Labor Day party HAD been epic though.  Every year it was the squad’s unofficial “end of summer” party.  When Eddie himself had graduated from the academy and was on FTO, his sergeant had hosted the Labor Day party.  It was always a big smash.  Usually there was a LOT of food, everything grilled with the exception of the few cold salads.  There were always coolers full of drinks – alcoholic and non.  There were always mixed drinks including the squad’s special version of a margarita.  There was usually some kind of water toy involved. One year it had been a slip-n-slide that everyone went down, in a bathing suit or not.  After dark there was always a bonfire and more drinks, sometimes some dancing, sometimes just staring at the stars.

This year the party had been at Eddie’s house.  He’d bought a pool on clearance.  It was one of those 18 foot wide, four foot deep rubber/plastic inflatable ring things.  It had cost less than $200 and Max figured that was a good thing since it was destroyed by the end of the night.  But while it had been inflated and full, everyone had gotten in it at some point.  Max had walked into Eddie’s grill – which thankfully wasn’t lit – when JP stripped out of her shorts and halter to reveal her bikini before jumping in.

After the swimming, splashing, dunking and general tom-foolery in the pool, everyone got out, dried off and relaxed with their favorite cold beverage while the food was grilled.  Most everyone ate their fill plus some more and then relaxed by the bonfire.  No one seemed to notice or care that JP and Max sat close together.  Everyone knew that JP was going to be transferring soon; they just weren’t sure where too.  JP hadn’t made a choice yet.  There were plenty of options.  The agency’s regulations would let her transfer to any unit she could qualify for.  Mounted? Yep. Crime prevention? Yep. Beach patrol? Yep. SWAT?  Much to some of the guys’ chagrin, yep.  If JP could meet the qualifications, the agency would assign her to SWAT when there was an opening.  They certainly wouldn’t be the first agency to allow women onto the SWAT team(s), but – for whatever reason – there was still a lingering prejudice against the idea.  That alone made JP think long and hard about it.
