Max didn’t mind being up at 0515.  He’d certainly had points in his life (in the service) when he’d been up a lot earlier and even when his squad worked day work they had to be at roll call at 0615 so he was up by 0500 or earlier.  In fact, this was a Saturday morning and he was quite delighted to be up at 0515. All he had to put on was his swim trunks, taking his shorty wetsuit with him.  He strapped his surf board to the top of his Jeep (cargo rack) and headed to the beach.  He was due to meet JP at 0600.

JP really wished she could have slept in a little bit. It was, after all, Saturday morning and the first weekend day off the squad had enjoyed in about three months.  Still, she’d gone to bed eager and nervous about going surfing with Max.  She didn’t like thinking about it as a “surfing date” although that’s what her mind most often did. She too was up by 0515, pulled on her bikini, pulled her long brown hair back into a braid, grabbed her wetsuit and loaded up her pickup truck.  The surf board went in the back, the suit on the seat beside her and she was off.

When she pulled into the parking lot at the The South End Surf Shop she saw Max already waiting.  They’d agreed to meet at the Surf Shop for two reasons: it was the only one on the beach (although there were other surf shops nowhere near the surf), and The Post Café was right next door.  Neither had eaten breakfast or even had a cup of coffee and this location would let them get whatever refreshments they wanted before and after surfing.

JP was a confident woman, especially given how hard she worked to stay in competitive form for the fitness circuit, but she felt self-conscious about meeting Max wearing only her bikini.  She needn’t have worried.  Max hit himself in the head closing his Jeep door when he got out because he was so busy looking at JP’s shape.  He was especially interested in the large tattoo she wore on her left side.  It (obviously) wasn’t visible when she was in uniform and he didn’t know she had any tattoos at all.  There was a large Bengal tiger in tall grass tattood on her left side and it stretched from almost her armpit to the top of her left thigh.  She also had a red dragon tattood on her left shoulder and some Chinese characters he didn’t recognize on the back of her right shoulder.  It was the tiger tattoo that had the biggest visual impact though – although not enough impact to distract him from her curves.
