It was hot.  Hot and dusty. Hot, dusty and NOT home.  Those three things seemed to define the day to day existence in this hell hole.  At least in the shade of his shanty it wasn’t BLAZING hot.  And the bunk room had a big fan that moved the hot air around a little bit.  He looked around at the other bunks in the room.  Nine besides his. Ten altogether.  Several of his roommates tried to minimize the impact of the heat by constantly saying, “But it’s a dry heat.”  Max assumed the same was true of hell but he didn’t really see that as an advantage.

Max was alone in the room and something didn’t feel right.  He couldn’t identify what it was, but something… something didn’t feel right.  His buzzed short hair was standing up on the back of his neck.  The room usually housed the Marine Corps squad he was attached to and that squad was enjoying their last day of a three day leave; an escape, however temporary, from the reality of this war.  Thanks to being in the Navy instead of the Corps, Max didn’t get the leave.  It didn’t matter; he didn’t have anywhere to go anyway.  Unless he could get completely out of this country, there was no escape.

Something was still bothering him. He tried to relax on his bunk but all he could do was toss and turn.  Every time he thought he was comfortable, that nagging feeling made him feel like he’d better move… do SOMETHING.

Just then, Sam walked in.  “What’s up, Doc?” he said.  It was his only joke; it lost its humor after the first time he’d said it, but for some reason he always called Max “Doc.”  A voice in the back of Max’s head said that made sense.  After all, Sam was a Marine.  Max was the Navy Medical Corpsman assigned to this squad of Marines.  But Sam wasn’t one of THESE Marines.  Sam was one of the junior officers on his squad at Oceanside Police Department. What was he doing here?
