Officer Jessica Porter, or JP for short, didn’t look in the mirror.  Although she knew the mirrors were there and that they served a purpose, she never looked in the mirror when she was working out unless it was to check her form.  Usually, her trainer let her know if there was something wrong with how she was doing an exercise.  At 23 years old, a college graduate and an Air Force veteran, JP was also (currently) the youngest female on the Oceanside, VA Police Department.  She wasn’t the only woman; the agency was about 20% female, but she was the youngest.  She was also close to the shortest.  At five foot three inches tall, it seemed her height made it easy for many of the male officers to dismiss her as a “serious” cop.  It aggravated her.  She used that aggravation to push the weight up another four times.

JP was well aware of the fact that there were two kinds of fitness.  There was “showing off” fitness where you looked good but your strength and endurance weren’t all that great.  Then there was performance fitness, or as she thought of it, combat fitness.  JP considered herself a cop; it was the dominant characteristic she would use to define herself if anyone asked.  Cops, in her mind, are warriors.  As nice, polite, friendly and social as she could be… she could fight a crackhead to the ground and force him into handcuffs – and she had several times in the past.

She loved the fact that she’d found a balance between looking professional and looking feminine.  The way her brother officers looked at her made that obvious – and they were never rude about it.  Most of them treated her like a respected little sister and while some of them weren’t really aware of their sexism – or simply didn’t see anything wrong with it – she appreciated that they all looked after her as a protected member of the family.  That family was her squad and part of the reason she worked so hard in the gym was to make sure she never let them down.
