A parolee driving a stolen pickup led deputies then police on a chase and was later arrested after driving erratically around Alhambra streets, sidewalks and lawns on Tuesday, April 2.

Before he surrendered, the 27-year-old Compton man hugged a woman police later identified as his girlfriend. The man seen in news coverage trying to intervene between the couple was her grandfather, Alhambra police Sgt. Michael Montano said.

The suspect had called his girlfriend earlier and told her he was on his way to her home in Alhambra, Montano said. He later told her he was being chased by police.

She told him to give himself up and called his parole officer, the sergeant said. The parole officer also called the man.

The pickup had been stolen from Whittier on Tuesday, Montano said.

Around 11:30 a.m., a deputy saw the pickup in Paramount, ran the license plate of the pickup and found out it was stolen, Sheriff's Lt. Joe Morales said.

The deputy followed the suspect, who sped up. The chase started near Myrtle Avenue and 70th Way, Morales said.

The chase went onto the 710 Freeway and ended around Rosecrans Avenue and the 710. Morales said he ordered the units to back away and go into surveillance mode.

A Sheriff's helicopter monitored the pickup truck. At some point, they stopped following the truck.

The suspect got off the 710 Freeway, entered the 10 Freeway and got off in Alhambra.

Alhambra police chased the suspect for a short time and canceled the pursuit. But detectives monitored the suspect, Montano said.

He drove in circles on many of the same streets in Alhambra, entering and then exiting a gas station at Garfield Avenue and Alhambra Road.

At one point, he hit and knocked over what looked a utility pole.

It ended near Garfield Avenue and McLean Street when he stopped, got out and ran. A man was later seen walking with the suspect and holding him by his shirt. The girlfriend was with them.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and parole violation. Booking records show he was being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles.
