Two Warren Police officers were injured Saturday night during a pursuit that began in their city and ended in Detroit.

According to a press release from the Warren Police Department, one uniformed patrol officer's foot was run over when the suspect fled a traffic stop after refusing to exit his vehicle and a second officer on his way to the scene collided with another vehicle and sustained a broken hand and possible concussion. That officer was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. March 16, Warren patrol officers in a marked vehicle executed a traffic stop on a gold Chevrolet Malibu near Eight Mile and Ryan roads for license plate violation.

Officers made contact with the driver and asked him to exit the vehicle. According to police, the driver was uncooperative and began to fight with officers as they attempted to have him exit the vehicle.

During this fight, the driver fled the scene in his vehicle and, in doing so, struck an officer and ran over his foot.

A vehicle pursuit ensued and traveled through several streets in Warren and Detroit before the driver pulled over in the area of Eight Mile Road and Russell Avenue.

The driver again fought with officers before he was taken into custody. Officers used a Taser gun to subdue the suspect.

They canvassed the area for a gun they believe the driver may have discarded during the pursuit. The driver was transported to the Warren Police Department jail.

Both officers involved in this incident did not require medical attention.

Upon hearing that officers were fighting with a subject, many others responded to the scene to assist. One officer was traveling southbound on Hoover Road approaching the intersection of Nine Mile Road in a fully marked patrol car with emergency equipment activated.

All traffic had stopped and yielded so that the officer could proceed through the intersection.

One driver in a silver Nissan Altima was traveling east on Nine Mile Road going toward the intersection, then stopped and backed up into the turn lane for southbound Hoover Road. As he drove into the turn lane and proceeded into the intersection, he collided with the Warren patrol car.

That officer suffered a broken hand and possible concussion; the driver of the Nissan was not injured and cooperated with investigators at the scene. Police investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the incident.

Warren police expect to release additional information about the chase and the related crash this week.
