DELTA COUNTY, MI—A rescue crew used drones and an airboat to save a person who had fallen through thin ice in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The Delta County Sheriff’s Office shared video of the rescue, which occurred in Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc, one mile east of the Days River, at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Deputies said the person had fallen through the ice while riding a 4-wheeler but was able to call 9-1-1. The video was made to showcase the airboat and warn the public about the dangers of thin ice.
The video shows the airboat easily cutting through thin ice to reach the submerged 4-wheeler. Rescuers are then seen sliding on their bellies to reach the victim and the cell phone.
“With the temperatures dropping over the next couple days, those spots of open water will get a thin layer of ice on them, making them look like they are safe,” deputies said. “Remember that ice conditions change on a regular basis.”
Deputies were assisted by the Michigan State Police, Ensign Fire, Masonville Fire and EMS and Gladstone Fire.
