3 N.J. Deputies Wounded in Firearms Training Mishap at Shooting Range

April 3, 2024
An inadvertent discharge from a weapon at the South Jersey Shooting Club in Winslow Township injured three Gloucester County sheriff's deputies during a training session.

An investigation is underway after three Gloucester County sheriff’s officers suffered minor injuries in a firearms mishap at a shooting range in Camden County on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred at the South Jersey Shooting Club in Winslow Township, where officers were taking part in training, an official said.

“It appears that there was an inadvertent discharge of a weapon while they were in the course of firearms training,” said Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Tom Gilbert. “Three people suffered minor injuries.”

No one was hospitalized, and the injuries were not life-threatening, Gilbert said. Authorities did not say if the officers were hit by shrapnel or a ricocheting bullet, or injured in another way.

Information is still being gathered about the incident, he said. Camden County officials are leading the investigation because the shooting range was in their jurisdiction.

“All the necessary agencies are cooperating with each other to assemble and assess the facts of what happened,” Gilbert said.

A spokesperson for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office referred questions about the matter to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office. Officials there did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
