Kan. Police Department Saved Newest K-9 from Euthanization

Nov. 18, 2021
An undeveloped kidney kept Loki, a dog from a Pennsylvania kennel, from joining another department and almost led to him being put down until the Spring Hill Police Department stepped in.

The Spring Hill Police Department's newest member — a 2-year-old Malinois and Shepherd mix from Olesno, Poland, is getting a second chance at life.

Loki, a dog who made his way from Poland, to a kennel in Pennsylvania, recently made the trip to Kansas when the Olathe Police Department took interest in him as their newest K-9.

But a medical screening found Loki had an undeveloped kidney.

The kennel told the Olathe department that they would replace Loki with another dog, but that if they sent Loki back, he would be put down.

"That's when Spring Hill stepped in," according to a news release from the city, which details Loki's journey.

The Spring Hill Police Department already needed a new K-9, so they took in Loki.

"By all accounts Loki is a highly driven canine that will fit in well with Spring Hill's needs," the release says.

While Loki will eventually need surgery, he is already being trained by an experienced K-9 handler, an officer at the department, the release said.

A pinning ceremony is scheduled for Loki on Thursday at the Spring Hill City Council meeting.

Loki is replacing Niko, another police dog, who is retiring.
