A Milwaukee police officer was fatally shot while executing a search warrant Wednesday.

A Milwaukee police officer was fatally shot on the city's south side Wednesday morning.

The tactical officer was executing a search warrant near the intersection of South 12th and West Dakota Streets shortly after 9 a.m. when the shooting occurred, according to WISN-TV.

The officer, a 17 year veteran, was transported to Froedtert Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One suspect was taken into custody following the shooting.

The officer is the third member of the Milwaukee Police Department to be killed in the line of duty in the last eight months.

"This is been an incredible difficult year for the department," Alderman Bob Donovan told the news station. "Now the third officer has lost his life in the service of Milwaukee, so it's a sad day for this community."
