Suspect Dead, Mississippi Police Officer Wounded in Standoff

A suspect is dead an a Hernando police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound following a standoff Sunday.

A suspect is dead an a Hernando, Mississippi police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound following a standoff Sunday.

The incident began after the man refused to stop for Hernando police and became engaged in a standoff on Interstate 55 near Senatobia, according to The Clarion Ledger.

The mid-afternoon pursuit involved officers from Hernando, Senatobia, Panola County and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said the suspect crash his vehicle before exchanging gunfire with officers.

The suspect was fatally wounded and an officer was wounded. Officials said that the officer's injuries are non-life-threatening.

The incident is currently under investigation.
