Distraction Device - Fuel Air, Low Roll, Low Roll II

Feb. 22, 2011

Safariland's three new Distraction Device models in its Defense Technology brand are designed for tactical teams to utilize in entry and barricade situations to temporarily distract or disorient.

The Fuel Air model uses thermobaric technology, which was pioneered by Sandia National Laboratories and licensed exclusively to Safariland. This technology is an advancement in the safe deployment of light/sound devices since the combustion occurs outside of the canister body creating over 169(+) dB of ear-piercing sound and 6-8 million candelas of light to overload the senses. Since the deflagration takes place outside of the body, the entire combustion is visible, resulting in an illumination period over 20 milliseconds long. This extended illumination also causes the flash image to be retained longer, which enhances the temporary disorientation effect to the exposed individual.

The reduced over-pressure, which is produced outside the canister body, is like a wall of air moving. Although the use of any diversionary device near people or property poses potential hazards, use of the Fuel Air Distraction Device mitigates these risks since body of the device does not explode. This makes the product ideal for first responders and operators responding to confined, populated areas such as buildings, trains, buses, schools, or malls.

The Low Roll model provides deflagration over 175(+) dB and 6-8 million candelas of light. Available in a non-reloadable device, the distinctive shape provides less roll and better grip. The diameter of the hex design body is 2.0 in. (5.0 cm) with an overall length of 5.0 in. (12.7 cm). The ergonomic feature of the Low Roll body complements its powerful output of light and sound, and the twelve top port configurations results in an even distribution of gases from the opposing ends of the canister. The distinctive shape and capabilities are tools for police, corrections, and military tactical teams worldwide.

The Low Roll II model is ergonomically designed to fit in the hand, and packs all the power of the popular Multi-Port Plus model. Boasting a remarkable 175(+) dB and 6-8 million candelas of light, this all-steel body is designed to reduce rolling, fit in tactical pouches easily and deliver the hyper-stimulation required for the situation at hand. The 11-gram non-reloadable incorporates an M201A1 type fuze with hex design gun steel body with a diameter of 0.78 in. (1.98 cm).
