Smiths Detection has completed installing 74 IONSCAN 500DT narcotics trace detection systems for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). With this order, the BOP now has a total of 102 IONSCAN systems deployed in prisons across the country. They are used to screen visitors and mail for trace amount of narcotics as part of the BOP's overall drug interdiction effort.

The IONSCAN 500DT is a desktop narcotics and explosives trace detection system with a color touch-screen interface and built-in printer. The advanced Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) detectors and software algorithms make it very sensitive and highly specific when detecting traces of narcotics for effective elimination of false positives. Smiths Detection has supplied more than 10,000 narcotics and explosives trace detectors worldwide for corrections, court security, aviation security, and force protection.
