A stabbing rampage that stretched across Rockford, Ill., left four people dead and seven others injured, all allegedly at the hands of a 22-year-old suspect who has since been arrested, CNN reported.

Wednesday’s violence stemmed from a home invasion in Winnebago County, after a woman attempted to flee the residence and was stabbed in the hands and face, according to Sheriff Gary Caruana.

Details of what transpired next are still unclear, but police said a 15-year-old girl, a 22-year-old man, a 49-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman were all killed in the carnage. There were no reports of gun violence in the incidents, though police said not all victims were stabbed.

Five additional people in the city of Rockford and two people in Winnebago County were also injured, Rockford police spokesperson Michelle Marcomb told CNN.

The woman who was stabbed in the hands and face trying to leave her home is “currently at a hospital, and she is intubated. She is in serious condition,” Caruana said Wednesday.

Neither the identities of the victims nor that of the suspect were immediately released.

“We have multiple scenes at this point, and we are still working on notifying families,” Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said Wednesday.

Police said there was no “clear motive” they had discovered for the violence, and they do not believe there are any additional suspects who remain at large.

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara called the bloodshed a “random and senseless act of violence.”

Federal law enforcement is assisting the investigation.
