MACOMB COUNTY, MI—A sheriff’s deputy was forced to dive out of the path a vehicle before it smashed into his patrol car in Macomb County.
Deputy Lukas Gjelaj had responded to westbound I-94 and Little Mack to assist the Clinton Township Police Department in shutting down the freeway due to a crash at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday.
He had positioned his vehicle in the far-left lane of westbound I-94, just east of the 324B Exit, with his overhead lights on, police said. Gjelaj was placing flares to divert traffic onto the Harper Road exit when noticed a white vehicle traveling toward him at a high rate of speed, according to police.
Realizing the vehicle was not going to stop, Gjelaj dove out of the way, deputies said, before the white Kia Sorento collided with the rear of the patrol vehicle, totaling both vehicles.
Both occupants, an 18-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, both from Port Huron, were both transported to an area hospital. Gjelaj was also transported to an area hospital.
The driver did not show signs of impairment, deputies said.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists of Michigan’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over for stationary authorized vehicles with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights activated.
If not possible due to traffic, weather, or road conditions, motorists should slow down to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit, and pass with caution, allowing the authorized vehicle as much space as possible.
