A Harrisburg man was charged with aggravated assault this month after dragging a police officer directing city traffic, court documents said.
A Harrisburg Bureau of Police sergeant was holding a stop sign and wearing a neon traffic vest while directing traffic at Front and Blackberry streets on March 6, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Duron H. Smith, 44, drove into that intersection at about 4:53 p.m. despite the police officer’s directions for southbound Front Street traffic to stop and allow traffic from Blackberry to merge onto Front, the affidavit said.
Smith eventually stopped, and the officer approached his driver’s side window. The officer ordered Smith to pull over, but Smith refused, according to the affidavit. Court documents said Smith accelerated as the officer was grabbing onto the car. The officer was dragged and fell off Smith’s car, injuring his hands, wrists and arms.
After the officer fell off his car, Smith sped south down Front Street, the affidavit said. Court documents said the officer later identified Smith as the driver from a photograph.
Smith was charged on March 8 with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and failure to stop or render aid after a crash. He has not been arrested as of Tuesday.
