A man convicted of killing a Millard County, Utah Sheriff's deputy seven years ago was sentenced to life in prison plus 80 years on Thursday.
Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was fatally shot by Roberto Miramontes Roman on Jan. 5, 2010 as she approached a Cadillac sedan she stopped near Delta, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Roman received the maximum sentence he was facing along with one prosecutors requested. U.S. District Judge David Nuffer ordered both sentences to run consecutively.
"The criminal justice system cannot promote respect for the law if it does not exact a heavy sanction when those sworn to uphold the law are murdered," prosecutors argued in a brief filed last week.
A federal jury convicted Roman on Feb. 7 of eight charges, including intentionally killing a local law enforcement officer engaged in the performance of official duties and using a firearm during a crime of violence.
