Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Haverly was on duty when his department SUV struck a telephone pole Tuesday morning.

ASHLAND, New York A Greene County sheriff's deputy killed in a crash on Route 23 early Tuesday was remembered as an "awesome worker."

Deputy Kevin Haverly, 26, was driving on duty at 6:15 a.m. on Route 23 in Ashland when his car struck a telephone pole, State Police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. Adam Brainard told the Catskill Daily Mail that Haverly was in the final hour of his 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift when the crash happened.

"It was a pretty severe accident," Brainard said.

Part of Route 23 was closed for hours as troopers investigated the crash Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Trooper Steven Nevel said no other vehicles were involved.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said Haverly was an intern in his department four years ago and helped conduct undercover aged drinking operations, he said.

"He was just a great kid. He always wanted to be a deputy sheriff," Apple said. "He was just an awesome worker with a smile on his face every day."

Haverly, a married father, was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy.

In a statement, the school said, "The Christian Brothers Academy community is shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of Greene County deputy Kevin Haverly '08. Kevin was a kind, friendly student who graduated from CBA with a deep sense of service to others and committed his professional life to helping others as a sheriff's deputy. Our prayers are with Kevin's wife and children, his family, his friends, and the Greene County community he bravely and loyally served."
