Texas Officer Shot in the Back Saved by Vest

A police officer in Calvert, Texas was saved by his ballistic vest after he was shot in the back early New Year's Day.

Officer Stephen Magnes was exiting his patrol car in a rural neighborhood when he was ambushed by a 36-year-old suspect, according to The Eagle.

The two-year veteran of the force was transported to CHI St. Joseph hospital where he was treated and released just hours after the shooting.

Magnes was giving a courtesy ride to a woman walking north along Texas 6. When they arrived at the residence she requested to be dropped off at, the uniformed officer exited the vehicle and immediately was shot. The woman was uninjured.

Petrick Lashane Jones fired his weapon several times, striking the officer was struck once, according to police.

Robert Magnes, the officer's father, wrote on Facebook that his son was sore and bruised, but was doing well and resting at home.

"He said it felt like Mike Tyson let loose on him," the father wrote. "This is not the call we wanted for the New Year. Thankfully God was watching over my son and (he) is alright. He was wearing his vest and the bullet did not penetrate it."

Jones was captured soon after the incident by Robertson County deputies and was formally charged Monday with aggravated assault. The crime is punishable by five to 99 years or life in prison, along with a $10,000 fine. Bail was set at $500,000.

The case remains under investigation by the Robertson Sheriff’s Department and Texas Rangers.
