A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper who was hit by a bullet fired over the Mexico border last week returned home from the hospital on Wednesday.

Trooper Danny Shaw returned to his home in Forney to continued his recovery after spending close to a week in the hospital following the shooting on Nov. 25, according to InForney.com.

Shaw and a Border Patrol agent were both shot near the Rio Grande river in Fronton shortly before 1 p.m. after a gunbattle erupted on the Mexico side of the border.

The trooper's wife, Melissa, told the news outlet that the bullet entered the trooper's pelvic area and exited through his right thigh. He currently has no feeling below his mid-calf in his right leg, but doctors said it may return after physical therapy.

Shaw was flown by CareFlite plane to the Mesquite Municipal Airport after spending several days in a McAllen hospital after the shooting and, after landing in Mesquite, was transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas for additional treatment before his release.

He received a police escort as he was transported home on Wednesday.

Shaw said that that his rookie partner, Brandon Zellous -- along with Border Patrol agents -- shielded him and helped him to safety until a DPS helicopter could land and transport him to the hospital.

He is the older brother of Dallas County Community College District Police Department Corporal Bryan Shaw, who was injured in the line of duty during a deadly ambush on law enforcement in Dallas this summer that claimed the lives of five officers.
