Video Shows Oklahoma Police Officer in Struggle for His Life

A Spiro police officer struggled with a suspect, pleading with him to drop with gun, telling him "I don't want to die. I've got kids."

A body camera video shows a dramatic struggle between a Spiro, Oklahoma police officer and suspect.

Police received a tip that John Reed, who they believed had a warrant out for his arrest stemming from a case of child sexual abuse in Missouri, was staying at a trailer home on Ashley Road, according to KFSM-TV.

Spiro Police Chief Michael Draper said that officers were told the man may be trying to flee the area and an officer was sent to the location to speak with him.

As the officer arrives he tells Reed that he needs to talk to him.

"Alright. Talk away," Reed can be heard telling the officer in the video.

"My understanding is you have some warrants out of Missouri," the officer says. "You need to step on outside for me, ok?"

Reed tells him that he has to get his suspenders on and goes back inside of the trailer when the officer orders him not to. The officer then follows him in when Reed pulls a gun on him.

The two men begin to struggle for several minutes as the officers pleads with him to drop the firearm.

"Mr. Reed don't do it. Let me have the fire arm okay?," he tells the man. "Mr. Reed please let go of the gun. I don't want to die. I've got kids."

At that point, the officer fires his weapon, hitting Reed in the hip.

"I believe he had every intention of shooting the officer. I'm 100 percent behind him. He did everything he had to do," Draper told the news station.

Reed was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. He is expected to have to undergo surgery on his hip.

Once released from the hospital, Reed will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

The officer is on paid leave pending an investigation, but Draper said he expects the officer to return to work in a week.
