A Harris County, Georgia Sheriff's deputy was shot in the head Saturday night and the suspected gunman was taken into custody in Alabama.
The deputy was conducting a traffic stop on I-185 near exit 34 around 7:30 p.m. when the shooting occured according to WTVM.
The law enforcement officer approached a 1994 blue Chevrolet Caprice containing three people when the suspect opened fire, wounding him in the face above his left eye.
Sheriff Mike Jolley told reporters that the deputy was transported to Midtown Medical Center in Columbus where he underwent surgery and is hopeful that he will survive.
Joe Lee Garrett was arrested in Phenix City, Alabama after he turned himself in to authorities a few hours after the shooting, Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told the news station.
The 24-year-old is being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and is currently being held as a fugitive from justice at the Russell County Jail.
Lytishia Horace also was arrested in connection with the case. Both are being held in Russell County pending extradition to Georgia.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently handling the investigation of the shooting.
