An Indiana sheriff's K-9 died this week of complication from an injury that took him out of service last year.

Steuben County Sheriff's K-9 Kash was pronounced dead on Thursday following the battle with the long-term injury to the 7-year-old Czech shepherd, according to The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Steuben County Sheriff Tim R. Troyer said that Kash served with the sheriff's department since 2011 and was assigned to Cpl. Brad Kline.

The year he was put into service, Orland residents Jack and Sue Shaw donated $4,000 so the department could purchase the dog. One year later, the K-9 helped located an injured driver in a bean field following a rollover crash off of Interstate 69.

Troyer called Kash a "faithful servant to his handler, his agency and the citizens of Steuben County."
