Kansas City, Kansas Police Detective Brad Lancaster died Monday, several hours after he was shot near the Kansas Speedway.

A Kansas City, Kansas police detective died Monday afternoon after being shot by a suspect near the Kansas Speedway.

Officers responded to a call for a suspicious person near the Hollywood Casino around 12:17 p.m. and made contact with 28-year-old Curtis Ayers, who took off running, according to KSHB-TV.

Detective Brad Lancaster was in the area and went to assist officers when the suspect opened fire, striking him several times.

The 9-year veteran was transported to Kansas University Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

"Our hearts are heavy with the senseless killing of Detective Brad Lancaster while in the line of duty today," the Kansas City, Kansas Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4 said in a statement. "We ask that you give your thoughts to the Lancaster family and the members of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department during this difficult time."

Ayers then fled the scene in the detective's vehicle before he crashed and carjacked a different vehicle with a woman and children inside. They were able to get out of the vehicle unharmed.

After a manhunt, Ayers was shot by Kansas City, Missouri police near Highway 71 and Bannister after he shot a woman and tried to take her car around 2:30 p.m. He was then taken into custody.

"This individual was very dangerous. We are so happy that this individual is in custody. Thanks to the collaboration and hard work of our Kansas partners in law enforcement," Kansas City, Missouri Police spokesman Sgt. Kari Thompson told reporters. "We are so glad this situation has come to an end."

A candlelight vigil for Lancaster will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.at the Kansas City, Kansas City Hall.
