Two Virginia police officers who were shot and wounded while responding to a domestic incident in February that left a colleague dead threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener Thursday afternoon.

Prince William County Police Officers Jesse Hempen and David McKeown took the mound before the game against the Miami Marlins at Nationals Park as they were cheered on by the packed house.

The two officers -- who are still recovering from their injuries -- responded to the domestic-related shooting in the 13000 block of Lashmere Court in Woodbridge along with Officer Ashley Guindon the night of Feb. 27 when officials said Ronald William Hamilton opened fire on them.

Hempen and McKeown were seriously injured while Guindon, who was on her first day on the job, was fatally shot.

Hamilton has since been charged with capital murder of a police officer and one count of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, who was found dead in the home.

Other first responders in the Washington, D.C. region who recently died in the line of duty were also honored with a moment of silence. Those first responders included Prince George's County Police Officers Jacai Colson, Noah Leotta and Brennan Rabain and D.C. Fire Lt. Kevin McRae.
