General Motors is recalling thousands of police cruisers for a possible steering issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that 6,280 2014-2016 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicles are being recalled for possible loss of power steering, according to Edmonds.com.

"Corrosion of the electric power steering module and the torque sensor connector may cause a loss of electric power steering assist," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "A greater steering effort would be needed to control the vehicle if power steering is lost, increasing the risk of a crash."

GM spokesman Tom Wilson told Edmonds that there have been no crashes or injuries reported linked to the recall.

A stop-delivery order on the cars was issued to dealers on March 16, but a date has not yet been set for the recall.

The LaGrange Police Department in Illinois first filed a complained with GM in September 2015 about the power steering loss in the vehicles. The company said in a statement that manual steering functionality is retained, but would require an increased steering effort.
