A third brother has been taken into custody in the attack on a Maryland police station that left an officer dead.
The Prince George's County Police Department made the announcement Monday as the investigation continues into the slaying of Officer Jacai Colson, who was fatally shot outside of the District III station Sunday, according to The Washington Post.
While officials didn't release the name of the third brother, the other two have been identified as Malik and Michael Ford.
Police said that while a motive is currently unknown, it is clear that the three gunmen intended to die in a gun battle with officers when they approached the station and waged the unprovoked attack.
The incident began when one of the men walked up to the station in Landover around 4:30 p.m. and opened fire outside the front doors, Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III told reporters.
As officers rushed out to stop the attack, Colson -- a four-year department veteran -- was fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
One of the suspects was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Shante Ramos, an aunt of all three suspects, said that Michael Ford suffers from Bipolar disorder and confirmed with the newspaper that he was the one who was shot.
"We have no idea what sparked this," she said. "We can’t believe this is happening. We are so sad for this officer dying. We have no idea what happened."
James Colson III, the fallen officer's father, said his son was "courageous and an excellent role model" for young men.
Colson graduated from Chichester High School in Boothwyn, Pa. and played football at Randolph-Macon College.
"He was a great kid. A really respectful kid and just a high-character young man," his former coach, Pedro Arruza told The Washington Post. "He treated everyone with respect."
